Establishment
With the dissemination of scientific and technological advances in the evolution of contemporary broadcasting technologies, breadth and depth of modern humanities and social academic research is also undergoing substantial expansion, various media can spread far and wide to every corner of the world, providing masses of information, interpretation, education, and entertainment, shaping the culture and values of the entire society and age.
Among them, the professional practice of journalism is the most important part of the media phenomenon, analysis of related studies have also gradually strengthened in their theories and paradigms, becoming an integral part of the humanities. This is also why after 50 years of refusing a journalism department at National Taiwan University, there is finally a change in understanding, and recognition for professional social value and academic content possessed by the journalism and media department, and in 1991 the Institute of Journalism at National Taiwan University was established (hereinafter referred to as "the institute").
The establishment of the institute was given birth by the academia and the media sectors: in 1986, leaders from National Taiwan University social science community and the media got together, they put forward the initiative to set up the institute, by comparing journalism academic systems at home and abroad, an objective was decided to cultivate Taiwan's advanced media professionals and to raise professional standards of journalism in Taiwan, and that the institution should be different from existing journalism institutes in Taiwan. As a result, by modeling on the practical training model of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, in 1991 Taiwan's first institute for enhancing the professional practice of journalism was established.
It was commendable that through the assistance of the founder of " United Daily News", Mr. Wang Tiwu, and such people as the director of "Canada News Center" of the newspaper, Mr. Chang Zuojin, the dean of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Professor Yu Techi, was invited to take charge of founding this institute, drawing highlights on professional journalism practical training system, including systems such as professional and practical teaching staff, systematic and professional courses, and the replacement of traditional academic thesis with journalistic works.
Although the institute has its origins from the graduate school of journalism of Columbia University, however, in order to match with Taiwan's educational system and media environment, some significant differences were also developed. For example, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is an institute wholly based on advanced practical training, the full-time teaching staff are all experienced practitioners, also, the school’s location is near the American capital and commercial center, which are also the core of international journalism coverage, formed by a huge body of students up to 200 people or more annually; on the other hand this institute is under Taiwan’s educational system, with stress on the importance of both academic requirements and regulations, and in accordance with the two-year educational system of general graduate institutes, and the same time, full-time teaching staff still required academic quality review, and professional teaching staff are employed part-time from the experienced practitioners.
As this institute admits students with aspirations in journalism, and has many practical teaching staff, in addition, graduate thesis can be in-depth interview works, the institute remains unique among domestic journalism and educational sector, attracting young graduates from various faculties interested in entering the field of journalism.
The institute had been established for nearly 20 years, under the joint efforts of past deans (Chang Chin-hua, Gu Ling-Ling, Lin He-ling, Peng Wen-Cheng, and Lin Li-Yun, etc.) and all faculty staff members and students, whether in teaching, curriculum, admissions, assessment, or other areas, insisting on the purpose of the establishment of this institute: "cultivating advanced journalism talents in Taiwan, and enhancing professionalism standards of Taiwanese journalism", and build up a consistent system and practice.
In recent years, in keeping with the grand educational goal and environment of National Taiwan University as a whole, and to constantly deepen and expand the objectives, the educational goal of this institute is set as follows: "to foster skills and abilities for journalism, training independent critical thinking and respect for the diversified citizens’ awareness, enhancing international outlook, and to strengthen journalism talents with expertise in academic field", to meet the overall objective of National Taiwan University: "society’s backbone and leadership talents with global vision that care for the community, contribute to the national and human sustainable development".
To achieve these educational goals, on matters such as curriculum design and teaching, student learning services, research and professional performance and so on, over the years the institute continued to draw on collective wisdom in order to combine practical and theory into curriculum and teaching, deepen research, and enhancing learning outcomes. Through teachers, students, alumni, consulting experts, and scholars, constantly reflect on improvements.
Facing the enormous environmental changes, as well as rapidly changing media technologies, how journalism and communications education can train talents with speculative abilities and creativity actualization, to meet the new trend of media convergence, with international vision, promote the development of Taiwan's journalism industry, and service fairness and justice of the people's welfare are indeed the important mission of the institute.
